What we do Our Stories Ryan's story "SOHK has helped me believe in myself again. I used to get so frustrated, but now I know how to stay calm, talk to someone, and get back in the game." Ryan* joined the SOHK schools programme after being referred by a teacher due to struggles with his peer group and low confidence. Following his first session, Ryan became upset and wanted to leave, prompting a meeting with his mother, who expressed concerns about his participation. She also shared that Ryan was being assessed for autism, and they were both struggling with the diagnosis. Both Ryan and his mum agreed they wanted to see how the programme could help and kept attending. Over the next year, we worked closely with Ryan using social stories, clear expectations, and breaks during rugby sessions. A staff member was available on the sidelines to explain decisions he found difficult to understand. Ryan showed up, and four months into the programme, he began showing significant progress, culminating in him winning the ‘sporting’ award at a rugby tournament. As Ryan’s confidence grew, so did his leadership skills. His teammates began respecting and supporting him, and he formed a small group of friends at school. His outbursts decreased, and he learned to manage his emotions better. Initially needing multiple ‘time outs’ per session, he now only requires one every few months, using them to calm down and re-engage with the game. Two years into the programme, Ryan has absolutely flourished both on and off the field. His rugby ability has greatly improved, and he has developed strong coping mechanisms, demonstrating emotional regulation and resilience, even when tackled and disagreeing with the ref! Ryan’s progress is a testament to the effectiveness of tailored support. He is a remarkable young man, and we continue to relish his contribution and participation in the programme.
