Last week we welcomed 15 women and 26 men to the School of Hard Knocks family. Despite the group being very diverse in a number of different ways, it is already so clear to see the commonalities between each of the participants – chiefly their drive and desire to work towards a brighter future. The cohorts have been incredibly engaged both on the pitch and during the personal development and mentoring sessions. The SOHK Wales course facilitators said that they were in awe of the bravery and honesty the groups showed over the first two days and found the participants’ response to the sessions extremely encouraging.

Our Cymru Programme Director’s favourite moment of the session was when one of the participants commented that he didn’t want to wait a week to see everyone. After overhearing this, one of his team mates asked whether he wanted to start walking with him every day for an hour - the conversation ended with about 6 of the team agreeing to walk together regularly to make sure they were spending their time wisely, which was something we had discussed in the session.

The development of social bonds is one of the key principles that contributes to the success of SOHK’s programmes so we’re delighted to see these types of relationships being formed in week one of the course and can’t wait to see what the rest of the programme brings.
