Latest News Young Talent shines at Wales Rugby Tournament Over 150 boys and girls from five schools across South Wales came together at Caerau Ely Rugby Club at the beginning of May for the School of Hard Knocks (SOHK) Wales Spring Rugby Festival – a two-day celebration of sport, teamwork, and personal growth. Students from Risca Comprehensive, Idris Davies School, Cantonian High, Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, and Cardiff West took part in the event, which featured a mix of touch and contact rugby, followed by exciting Barbarian-style matches blending players from all schools into mixed teams to play each other. Over the past year, we have focused a great deal on teamwork and how we come together as a team. The tournament’s unique setup not only showcased the participants’ developing rugby skills but also enabled new friendships, emotional control, and positive peer engagement, with everyone conducting themselves so well. Thanks to Liam Mackay for organising the setup and to Caerau Ely Rugby Club, whose staff praised the students for their politeness and respect throughout both days. Support staff from each school also played a vital role in making the festival a success, offering support and encouragement to the young players during their games. This term’s focus on the physical element of contact rugby has paid off, with the standard of play demonstrating significant progress across all teams. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and a shared joy in the game which was wonderful to see. In recognition of their achievements, SOHK awarded Player of the Day bucket hats to a standout student from each school, celebrating effort, sportsmanship, and commitment on and off the pitch. The annual Spring festival is a milestone for programme participants and a core part of SOHK’s broader mission to support young people facing challenges in their education. Through our unique mix of sport, 1:2:1 mentoring, and personal development, SOHK equips students with the tools to thrive – building confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging that will last them well beyond their school years. Torran Macdougall, Programmes Director at SOHK, said: “This tournament was a real milestone for our students in Wales. Their emotional control throughout the event was exceptional, and it was heartening to see young people from different schools mixing so well, supporting one another, and forming genuine friendships. This proves just how powerful rugby can be – moving beyond a sport to serve as a vehicle for connection, courage and community. “As a team, we’re incredibly proud of every boy and girl who took part, and we’re excited to continue building on this progress as we move into the summer term.” As SOHK continues to expand its reach in Wales and beyond, events like these serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of sport for development. 🔗 Learn more about SOHK: www.schoolofhardknocks.org.uk🏉 See our latest job opening in Wales: https://www.schoolofhardknocks.org.uk/regional-manager-wales
